We get our herbs from Chickadee Farm Herbs at Flatbush in northern Alberta. Flatbush is a small hamlet of farming community in a forested area two hours north of Edmonton, Alberta. Their farm is in a unique location on the bank of the Pembina River. In 2002, they became certified organic - their present certifier is OPAM (Organic Producers Association of Manitoba).
When visiting Chickadee Farm Herbs, we learned very interesting facts:
they gather several herbs in approved areas of the boreal forest,
they offer a wide range of herbs that are hardy in the region of northern Alberta. These include many varieties of garden-grown herbal teas and culinary herbs,
they use ethical wildcrafting practices to avoid depleting stands of wild plants. Therefore, they collect only a portion of the herb available on the plants so that the plants can easily regenerate,
they do not return to a patch until it has fully regenerated.
they also do not drive into the patches, and thus do not disturb the forest by making trails; rather, they walk into the patch and carry the herb out on backpacks.

My Story
Herbs and teas have been used to support health for thousands of years. Our whole leaf herbs, teas and spices have been created with health and wellness in mind. Our blends use the best possible natural and organic ingredients available to create a 100% Natural Goodness.
Few years ago, I decided to increase my knowledge of nutrition and healthy eating.
My grandmother was a Medicine Woman in Mali, West Africa, who used the properties of herbs and spices for healing people. It was she who influenced my interest to learn more about how food, herbs and spices affect our health.
I learned very quickly that while sugar was not good for one’s health, herbs and spices could positively improve one’s health.
Since I did not like the taste of flavored teas, I developed my own line of teas. My goal was to create a smooth, pleasant, healthy, flavorful tea that did not taste fake or artificial. This became an ongoing hobby — mixing various herbs with teas and sharing them with family and friends.
A few years ago, I discovered chai latte. I loved the spiced taste but found them too sweet and difficult to digest. And I was not alone. When researching the opinions of other chai drinkers, I found that there was a demand for less sweet, naturally spiced chai without unnecessary sugar, oils and flavorings. Having considerable knowledge of spices and herbs, I decided to develop my own recipe using whole real spices, and eliminating sugar, to provide overall health benefits.
To make Canada Chai healthier, I selected the best natural sweeteners. I did a nutrition information comparison between cane sugar, maple syrup, honey, corn syrup and fructose. It was a natural choice to select maple syrup and honey versus the other higher glycemic rated sweeteners like cane sugar.
To continue with my quest to make the “healthiest Chai available”, I went a step further and created a beverage for people who needed to reduce their sugar intake (Diabetics, those watching their carbohydrate and fat intake, or those with chemical and food sensitivities).
Our Unsweetened Canada Chai was created to contain zero carbohydrates. I decided to stay away from “sugarless” or "sugar-free" artificial sweeteners and let the consumers decide how to sweeten their chai. Market research has shown that those who prefer unsweetened chai are really looking for a chai with no artificial additives or sweeteners. Those who have been drinking the “not-so-sweet chai” or “sugarless chai” with saccharin, aspartame or other sugar substitutes have complained about their artificial aftertaste.
For the Caffeine-Free Unsweetened, instead of creating a “decaffeinated ” version where tea is put through a chemical process that is worse for one’s health than caffeine alone, I created a caffeine-free version using roasted chicory that has zero caffeine instead of the black Assam tea used in the other two flavours.
